Project Description

Heroes for Healthcare is a Milwaukee area non-profit focused on helping veterans with medical training find employment at local hospitals and medical centers. The organization began to see such high volumes of data that the operation could not continue to be run using a pen-and-paper file storage method. Code the Way connected with the leaders of the organization and began to develop a web-based application in ASP.NET to collect and store data on soldiers, partners, and donors. My team in 2018 was tasked with fixing the issues with the soldier and partner portions of the project, which had been completed by another group of students.

Personal Reflection

Project Reflection

Throughout the Heroes for Healthcare project I never stopped learning. With only six weeks to complete our portion of the project, we quickly realized we needed to stay focused and have a very structured workflow. We had already learned about the scrum method so we used this and it proved quite effective. Once we had gotten into the project, it became clear that pair programming and clear communication would be essential to the project's completion. Without these two things, individual teammates would often have opposing visions for a feature or an implementation and we would get stuck with naming and syntax errors or even entirely conflicting concepts. Luckily, we managed to get into a good workflow and produced a working product by the end of the summer. The reactions from the management at Heroes for Healthcare was incredibly touching and meaningful to me as this was the first project I had done which would actually help people. Even though there was no financial compensation for my contributions to the project, the appreciation of the Heroes for Healthcare management and the knowledge that we could play a large part in helping the less fortunate in the Milwaukee area made my time well worth it.
